For no reason at all, here is a pic of Jimmy Doolittle and the legendary Gee Bee. A plane that was basically an engine and minimal wings and flight controls. An F-105 for the piston era.

There’s a Gee Bee replica at the New England Air Museum in CT. When I see how tight the cockpit is and realize that if anything goes pear-shaped in flight, it’s a fabric-covered coffin.

The pilot is basically the cushion for the engine in a crash.

I’d say the engine is the cushion for the pilot. Unless he crashed going backwards?
